We quickly and accurately create our 3D plant models from vast data captured by our 3D laser instruments via our processing software. We use Autodesk Plant 3D, which allows us to model out specific pipework from all recognised catalogues, as well as specialty specifications we download from suppliers. Once we have created your 3D model, we can automatically export a full range of piping isometrics, fully dimensioned with a full list of bill of materials as requested.

Isometrics are all customized around our Clients’ standards including drawing sizes and borders and can be tailored to align with NDT inspector’s data entry fields.

A3D can offer piping orthographic, a 2D snapshot from the 3D model that holds more information including surrounding features to add clarity. The greatest benefit though is that we can reduce the total number of piping isometrics required to cover any process to around 10-20%.

 Your fully functioning 3D model can be used for clash detection and asset/document management integration.


The Point cloud is used to create a 3D spec-driven model, from which we can produce orthographics and other forms of 2D documentation upon request.



Obtaining NDT documents is much easier when extracted from a 3D model. Traditional methods take considerable time to walk the lines to gather data.


Orthographics are gaining popularity and are taking over from isometric drawings, as our Client is left with a 2D representation of a 3D model, which are easier to use and reduces the number of files needed in comparison to isometrics.


The inspection drawings closely relate to the 3D model, so any changes effected on site can also be changed on the model, which in turn will update the NDT drawings and improve our Client’s site documentation consistency.

Do isometrics come from the point cloud?

No, the isometrics are converted from a model, once you have a model you are able to obtain isometrics, orthographics,etc.

Can you use our borders and symbols?

We can use your borders and symbols. Whatever work we carry out will be consistent.

Should I use isometrics or orthographics?

Orthographics are easier for operators to read and offer the same information.

Can your isos show weld lines?

Yes, we can provide isometric drawings with weld lines.

3D P&ID Validation

Using 3D process models to cross-validate with smart P&IDs to determine their as-built accuracy and also allow for their on-site documentation to be kept up to date via a 3D model.

Pharmaceutical 3D Design

Complete 3D laser scanning and 3D modeling of a specific process area ahead of a new capital initiative. This initiative would require process changes to enable removal of gas from the top of the existing two vessels, compressing the removed gas and returning liquid downstream.

Large Petrochemical Terminal

Client required A3D to prepare an Autodesk Plant 3D Process model where ALS would be exporting pipework orthographic drawings as part client’s NDT inspection program in meeting their health and safety initiatives. 

Water Authority Design Service

Completed a project for the water industry at one of their pumping and filtration sites. Our client for this project was an EPC contractor who required first a RECAP scan project file, Smart 3D process model, and Smart P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams). Although smaller in terms of number of laser scans than a typical bulk storage terminal, water industry installations present different challenges.

NDT Inspection Drawings

A major UK pharmaceutical firm, required piping isometrics for NDT purposes of their main process plant, because of the size of the processing unit (over 6000m2) and their limited staff, they asked us to scan the unit and from the scan data produce isometrics. The unit consisted of two buildings (each roughly 500m2), which both had a minimum of 3 floors, and a roofing area, which consisted of a further few levels of steelwork walkways.
