Advanced 3D Laser Solutions (ALS) were engaged to complete the 3D scanning of underground fuel storage tanks across multiple UK depots. ALS were recommended by Viking Inspection Ltd, a fellow Tank Storage consortium member, as a company having the specialist skills required to complete the analysis of these buried tank floors. It was required that our surveyors had completed ‘Working in Confined Space’ training along with our CCNSG safety passports. As the storage tanks are in high demand ALS respond quickly whenever a tank is emptied, cleaned and prepared for internal works. The survey was completed using the FARO Focus 3D laser scanner and 12 reference spheres, each tank taking around 2 hours to complete.
So what was the reason for the survey?
The client is installing draw off pipework to enable separated water to be removed beneath stored fuel. In order to position accurately the tank floor low spots were identified after analysis of scan data. Ongoing the client now has a complete tank scan file that can be used throughout life cycle of tank, taking measurements and completing shell plate analysis. Future scan data can thereafter be compared to determine any changes that would warrant detailed inspection.
